The question is ...which came first, the chicken or the egg? Well for Kim it was the egg. 25 years ago she painted her son his first Easter Egg. She quickly moved from real eggs to wooden eggs, having lots of fun as she watched people come by her booth at craft fairs and handle the eggs so gently. Sometimes she would "accidentally" drop an egg to let people see they were kid friendly....wooden eggs. It took only one accident to switch from real eggs to wooden eggs. She also needed something to occupy her son then her daughter while she painted, so when they were young she would set them in the high chair and they would paint together.
In 2001 Kim opened The Crafters Canvas. Her vision was to have a space to sell supplies along with her handmade arts & crafts. She began teaching art classes which became the main focus at the studio. Although she still has the studio space she no longer teaches art there. Her new venture in teaching will be here, where she plans on offering FREE art classes via Youtube and Livestream.
Kim has been painting for over 25 years and had always wanted her own style. Her work seemed to always be compared to someone else. She prayed continuously for God to give her her own style, something only she would be known for.
In May 2009, Memorial Day weekend at 11:00pm she nailed two nails in her kitchen wall and hung a canvas. She didn't really know what she was going to paint. As she painted the background it didn't turn out the way she wanted, but it ended up better than she expected. A chicken drinking a cup of coffee came to her mind, so she painted the white silhouette of a tall chicken, added a big yellow beak, feathers and long yellow legs and feet. When she added the coffee cup she decided this red would be her signature color....and Cuppa Joe was born!
That weekend she also met the man who would soon become her husband. "Mitch is very supportive of me and my art, he is my biggest fan". Together they have grown the paintings to over 30 pieces. Mitch comes up with ideas and Kim paints them. This is The Chicken Coop Series.
